Today there are many professions where it is impossible to see any final product. Unlike a chef preparing food in a restaurant, or a builder constructing a residential building, the activities of laboratory employees remain unnoticed by society, but at the same time have a huge impact on the development of science and technology. The main workforce of the laboratory are laboratory assistants. And depending on the specialist’s place of work, various areas of the profession can be distinguished: for example, chemical analysis laboratory assistant.
Description of the profession
A chemical analysis laboratory technician works on various metals, ores, and petroleum products, obtaining information about the chemical composition or special properties of a substance necessary for research.
The main requirements for the candidate relate to his knowledge and skills. So, to work, you need to understand chemistry, know the chemical and physical methods of conducting research, the properties of substances, including radioactive ones, and the principles of working with them. In addition, it is necessary to know how laboratory equipment works correctly, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and precautions during use.
Among the responsibilities of a chemical analysis laboratory assistant are the following: performing tests, the complexity of which depends on the qualifications of the employee, checking the performance of instruments and their operating parameters. It also receives materials for further analysis.
The work of a chemical analysis laboratory technician involves interaction with hazardous substances. Therefore, before allowing an employee to work in the laboratory, it is necessary to carry out a number of checks and certifications. Thus, the laboratory assistant will have to undergo a medical examination, listen to instructions on safety and security, and later confirm the acquired knowledge. Also, during the first two weeks of work, the laboratory assistant undergoes an internship under the supervision of a more experienced employee. Although there may be options in which it will last less, this decision depends on the manager.
Before starting work, the laboratory technician must check the condition of his workwear (robe, apron, leather shoes, glasses), the functionality of the equipment, and the ventilation system. If any problems or breakdowns are detected, you should immediately notify your supervisor. Conducting any research and experiments with non-functioning equipment or low-quality protective equipment is strictly prohibited.
During the work, the laboratory assistant must monitor the substances used, check their reactions, label the containers used and put all substances into special boxes. And at the end of the working day, the laboratory assistant cleans his workplace, turns off all devices and makes appropriate entries in the journal.
Due to the fact that the laboratory assistant interacts with aggressive substances, accidents cannot be ruled out, so employees are trained to provide first aid for chemical burns and poisoning with harmful substances.

Chemical analysis laboratory assistant
When it comes to the revival of the domestic high-tech industry, this naturally implies the emergence of new vacancies in highly specialized professions. Working as a chemical analysis laboratory assistant is just one such position.
This job specialization has several characteristic features that determine the potential contingent of applicants:
- the specialty of chemical analysis laboratory assistant is becoming in demand in significant quantities during the formation of new industries in the field of applied chemistry;
- An increase in the wages of these specialists is possible only in conditions of economic growth. During periods of stagnation and recession, wages show a decline to a level below the subsistence level (this is a fact confirmed by experience);
- The job description of a chemical analysis laboratory assistant tends to expand. It tends to include the responsibilities of related specialists (so that in the future it would be possible to abandon related positions altogether), and therefore differs greatly from enterprise to enterprise.
But in general, the average applicant for the position of laboratory assistant is required to:
- secondary specialized, or, preferably, higher education (with a diploma in chemical engineering), confirming knowledge of knowledge in the field of chemistry;
- experience working with hazardous reagents (acids, solvents);
- The main thing is solid knowledge and skills in using a personal computer. A modern laboratory assistant (as, indeed, an engineer in any other specialty) is increasingly a programmer who, if he does not know in detail the nuances of writing code, then represents the ideology of drawing up an electronic algorithm;
- sometimes they also add work experience (usually from 5 years). However, due to the relative shortage of such personnel, the employer often refuses this requirement.

Basic labor functions performed by laboratory assistants
Since the profession of a laboratory assistant in different sectors of the economy can be found in different professional standards (including those that have not yet been adopted), it is not yet possible to give an exhaustive list of all labor functions assigned to these workers. Nevertheless, all professional standards have a number of common points that are characteristic of any laboratory technician, regardless of the field in which he works.

Common functions for laboratory technicians will be:
- Organizational preparation for the analysis process. As a rule, this concept includes the preparation of documents compiled during the analysis process.
- Preparation of necessary materials, solutions, mixtures, components and equipment.
- Sampling.
- Actually carrying out analyzes and tests that are part of the professional responsibilities of a laboratory assistant. This feature is not available in all areas. For example, when chemically analyzing water in water supply systems, drainage or heat supply systems, this should be done by analytical chemists, while laboratory assistants carry out only preparatory work. The same applies to the work of laboratory assistants in microbiology: microbiologists are directly involved in research, and laboratory assistants assist them and prepare equipment along with consumables.
In some professional standards, laboratory assistants are assigned other functions. For example, in the professional standard for a foundry specialist in the automotive industry, laboratory assistants are entrusted with the preparation of core or molding sand, as well as the preparation of castings. True, they perform this work together with molders and other workers.
Where is the position “laboratory assistant” found?
Before talking about the professional standard for laboratory technicians, it would be useful to define what this profession is. And this is not as easy as it might seem at first glance...

The fact is that a laboratory assistant, as the name suggests, is a laboratory worker. Laboratories can be found in almost any industry where any kind of research is carried out, from scientific to applied (for example, the analysis of metal samples in a steel mill or the analysis of biological samples in hospital laboratories). In essence, laboratory assistant is the name of a whole category of support staff positions in various fields of activity.
Accordingly, there is also no uniform professional standard for laboratory assistants. As of July 2021, this job title appears as one of the qualification levels in a number of professional standards:
- worker for diagnosing electrical equipment using chemical analysis methods;
- a specialist in chemical analysis of water in water supply, heat supply or drainage systems;
- oil quality control specialist;
- non-destructive testing specialist;
- microbiologist;
- foundry specialist in the automotive industry, etc.
In addition, there are also laboratory engineers. This position is provided for by professional standards for specialists in the field of optical fiber production, oil and gas refining, and production of nanostructured materials. Thus, there is no need to talk about a single professional standard for laboratory assistants. Every time we talk about this kind of document, it is necessary to clarify for which workers in which area it is required.

Purpose of use and mandatory use
There are several organizational areas for using professional standards for employees of various enterprises:
- the need to simplify the determination of tariff categories;
- introduction of progressive forms and systems of remuneration;
- supplying the organization with highly qualified personnel;
- simplicity of settlement operations when determining salaries;
- organization of training and certification events;
- stabilization of management functions and tasks.
As for the mandatory use, this point is stipulated within the framework of Art. 57 Labor Code of the Russian Federation. It says that Prof. the standard is a mandatory document, and from 2021, organizational leaders must adapt to its standards.
